Phytoplankton lipid content influences freshwater lake methanogenesis

چکیده
1. Rates of methanogenesis in freshwater sediments have been shown to increase with inputs of phytoplankton biomass. Although many studies have shown the importance of resource quality for decomposition, little is known of the importance of substrate quality on rates of methanogenesis. 2. Here, we studied the effects of lipid content and taxonomic affiliation of phytoplankton biomass on rates of methanogenesis in lake sediment slurries from five lakes differing in trophic status. 3. Substrate quantity had a positive effect on methanogenesis despite differing trophic status. Furthermore, we observed that phytoplankton biomass quality, in terms of lipid content, enhanced methanogenesis rates. However, rates of methanogenesis between lake sediments treated with Scenedemus obliquus or Microcystis aeruginosa did not differ when lipid content was held constant. 4. Phytoplankton lipid content has been shown to increase when nutrients are limiting, which may result in an increase in substrate quality for methanogenesis with eutrophication. However, our study revealed that responses of substrate quantity to nutrient enrichment likely outpace the effects of resource quality and may result in a net increase in CH4 emissions from eutrophied lakes. Interestingly, the resource quality feedback may at least partially reduce the potential effect of eutrophication on lake methanogenesis.

Climate Impact on Phytoplankton Blooms in Shallow Lakes Data-Based Model Approaches and Model-Guided Data Analyses
Lake ecosystems across the globe have responded to climate warming of recent decades and are expected to further change in the future. Anticipating impacts that are detrimental to water quality is critically important given that lakes constitute a major part of the earth’s freshwater resources. A central concern is the climate impact on phytoplankton, including algae and cyanobacteria, since it...
متن کاملEffects of agriculture, tourism and the dam on eutrophic status of the Zerebar Lake, Iran
The Zerebar Lake is a shallow freshwater lake located in the northwestern Iran. The lake is surrounded by three human activities: agriculture, tourism and dam. The present study aimed to investigate (1) which human activity has the greatest impact on eutrophication of the Zerebar Lake (2) If phytoplankton communities, as the indicator, are correlated with the human activities. Water samples wer...

متن کاملExploitation and destabilization of a warm, freshwater ecosystem through engineered hydrological change.
Exploitation of freshwater resources is having catastrophic effects on the ecological dynamics, stability, and quality of those water resources on a global scale, especially in arid and semiarid regions. Lake Kinneret, Israel (the Biblical Sea of Galilee), the only major natural freshwater lake in the Middle East, has been transformed functionally into a reservoir over the course of approximate...
